Questions to Guide your Reading of Chapter 5 Communicating Hurt

1. Define hurt

2. Describe a situation where someone feels hurt (a negative feeling) but does not feel negatively towards the person who hurt him/her and the outcome of the hurt feelings is positive.

3. Why/how would a person's ability "to respond to hurtful events" (p. 126) affect his/her experience of being hurt?

4. How does Expectancy Violation Theory (EVT - a second look) relate to the statement on page 129: "the discrepancy between what they predict will happen and their expectations or ideals about whether or not the other person should hurt them."?

5. Explain the factors associated with interpreting hurt - self, other and relationship.
